Name: Monarda didyma.

Common name: Scarlet beebalm, red bergamot.

Description: A dense, rounded, cluster of bright red, tubular flowers appear from June to August. The 3-foot stems are lined with large, oval, dark-green leaves. Foliage has a minty scent. In the landscape: Grow in rich, moisture-retentive soils in full sun to partial shade. Provide afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Divide clumps every three years to prevent overcrowding and to control spread of the plant. Good air circulation is needed to combat powdery mildew.

Best trait: Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Hardiness: USDA Hardiness Zones 4-9.
