Trials and tribulations
Plant trials are fascinating. The Mt. Cuba Center’s trial garden spent the summer testing heuchera and coreopsis. The Delaware nonprofit’s garden featured 92 cultivars of coreopsis and 87 cultivars of heuchera. These were the most favored cultivars, as voted on by the guests of the center. It should be noted that this does not reflect overall plant performance or the opinions of Mt. Cuba Center. Stay tuned to their website this winter for their official ratings.
I guess I still have a lot to learn as most of my favorites weren’t the ones picked by either the visitors or the preliminary ratings by the Mt. Cuba Center.
Top Coreopsis
1. ‘Citrine’
2. ‘Ruby Frost’
3. ‘Cosmic Eye’
4. ‘Crème Brulee’
5. ‘Show Stopper’, ‘Route 66’, ‘Sunburst’ (tied)
Top Heuchera
1. ‘Citronelle’
2. ‘Silver Scrolls’
3. ‘Spellbound’
4. ‘Green Spice’, ‘Guardian Angel’, ‘Caramel’ (tied)

Heyyyy….Merry Christmas!
By the time this magazine reaches you, you probably will have taken down your Christmas tree, Menorah, or whatever holiday decorations you risk life and limb to fasten to your roof. You also may be sick of Gangham Style, the inescapable hit that shattered YouTube records and made Psy an international pop sensation.
However, Van Belle Nursery’s inspired parody video may put you in the Christmas spirit all over again. The Abbotsford, B. C. -based wholesale grower and propagator shot this video in about an hour and released it on the world shortly after. My favorite part: the tractors.
