An evergreen with splendid flowers and tasty fruit — Feijoa sellowiana sounds too good to be true. But it’s the real deal, and it’s an underused plant in the warmer zones. Think about the fun marketing that could accompany this novel plant. Flowers have fleshy petals with scarlet stamens topped with gold. Flowers have both male and female parts. Mature foliage has a greenish-blue leathery texture. It also features exfoliating reddish-brown bark.
Why grow F. sellowiana?
• Showy, fragrant flowers that range from purple, red or white appear in spring.
• Edible fruit that tastes somewhat like pineapple is available late summer or early fall.
• Rarely affected by pests or disease and only needs an occasional pruning in the landscape.
• Safe to use under utility lines.
