On our first episode of "Get To Know," Associate Editor Katie McDaniel talks with James Saunders, the director of production at Saunders Brothers nursery.
Welcome to Nursery Management's first episode of "Get To Know," in which we talk to a person from the industry and learn about their life in horticulture.
From pretending to nail greenhouse covers with plastic hammers as a child to being the director of production at Saunders Brothers, growing plants is in James Saunders' blood.
The wholesale nursery is located in Virginia and consists of around 100 acres of container production and 150 acres of field production. The company ships more than 1,100 products to garden centers, landscapers and re-wholesalers throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
"I got started in horticulture pretty much since the time I was born — grew up on the farm with cousins, brothers, parents, grandparents," Saunders says. "I’ve been involved since a very young age."
As a younger fourth-generation nurseryman, Saunders is looking forward to incorporating new things at the nursery. He believes "mechanization is one of the names of the game."
Listen to the full conversation above to get to know James Saunders and learn more about what he does at Saunders Brothers.
