American Horticultural Society announces youth garden funding grant

The American Horticultural Society has announced the launch of the Julia Rappaport Growing Gardeners Fund, a grant program designed to support youth gardening and gardening science projects.

The grant, which provides $1,000 to $2,000 annually to one educator, is intended to increase access to hands-on gardening and gardening sciences for youth and to foster a lifelong passion for gardening, the natural world and horticulture in children from all backgrounds.

“We are excited to offer this opportunity for educators to bring the joys and benefits of gardening to their students and community,” said AHS Director of National Programs Courtney Allen. “This grant will help create engaging, educational and transformative gardening experiences that can inspire the next generation of horticulturists and environmental stewards.”

Educators can apply by sharing details of their proposed project, including objectives, plans, timeline, staff and budget, as well as the anticipated impact on youth. The application window is open until May 10, 2024.

The grant recipient will be announced at the annual AHS National Children & Youth Garden Symposium in July, but applicants don't need to attend the symposium to apply for the grant.

A gift to AHS from Thomas Byrd and Valerie Rappaport and their family established the new program in honor of Valerie’s mother, Julie Rappaport, a former AHS board member and long-time member of AHS, who loved gardening, science and education.
