Stanton Gill, a distinguished entomologist and icon in the cut flower industry, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 5 at age 72, according to his obituary.
Gill, of Brookeville, Maryland, was "known for his kind heart, tremendous energy and love of life," his obituary reads.
Gill worked with the University of Maryland at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center (CMREC), for nearly 50 years and enjoyed sharing his passions of research and education.
He was an integral part of establishing the Montgomery College landscape technology 2-year AA degree program. He also purchased farmland and establishing an extensive orchard operation at his MacBride and Gill Falcon Ridge Farm and was a longtime and well-known vendor at the Olney Farmers Market, along with several other markets.
"But beyond Stanton’s work was his shining personality and kindness," his obituary reads. "His light was a strong force and he will be remembered for his practical jokes, the games at his farm parties, his willingness to always step in and help his coworkers and friends, his unending energy, and his love of adventure. As a husband, father, friend, educator, colleague and mentor, he touched many lives and will long be remembered."
Gill is survived by wife Nancy, two daughters Chelsey and Kelly (Kentaro), sister Rose Mary (Ed) and brother David (Sandy).
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund for the Montgomery College Environmental Horticulture Program will be established.
A gathering of remembrance will be held Oct. 16 at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center, 4240 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, Maryland 21042.
The family will receive visitors at a first gathering from 4 to 6 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a 30-minute remembrance that will also be available via Zoom. A second gathering will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The 30-minute remembrance will be held at 7 p.m., also available via Zoom, with visitation following.
